Lady Rams lock down CACC Tournament berth after defeating Post on Senior Day, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball secured a spot in the 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament after knocking off visiting Post, 3-1, on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Prior to the match, Philadelphia University honored seniors Danielle Carney and Ellie Edgar for their four years of commitment to the program, and head coach Mark Magarity for his 200th career victory which came on Oct. 20 at Concordia (N.Y.).

After dropping the first set to the Eagles (8-15, 7-8 CACC) 25-23, the Lady Rams (18-8, 12-5 CACC) stormed back to take the next three 25-10, 25-13, and 25-17.

Outside hitters Brittany Olson and Allison Manley each recorded double-doubles in the win for Philadelphia. Olson recorded a match-high 15 kills and 17 digs, while Manley had 12 kills and 17 digs. Edgar added eight kills and Carney contributed six.

Setters Heather Martin and Allyson Schillinger tallied 25 and 17 assists, respectively. Libero Morgan McCarthy had 17 digs.

Philadelphia had a team hitting percentage of .302 (50 kills, 11 errors, 129 attacks).

The Eagles got 13 kills and 11 digs from Emily Wilman, and 11 kills and 12 digs from Kelly Hayes. Juila Slyaktina had a match-best 29 assists, while Vanessa Ramos recorded a match-high 21 digs.

Trailing 22-19 in the first set, Post rattled off five straight points with the help of four Philadelphia errors to take a 24-22 lead on its way to the win. Hayes had four kills for the Eagles. Olson, Manley and middle hitter Chelsea Hughes all recorded three kills for Philadelphia.

The Lady Rams came out swinging in set two and jumped out to an 11-3 advantage. Olson led the charge by recording three kills. The margin hit 14 when a Post service error made the score 23-10. Olson and Manley had four kills each, while Edgar had three. The Lady Rams hit .462 (13-1-26) in the set.

Philadelphia hit well in set three with a percentage of .417 (12-2-24), while keeping Post at .000 (6-6-27). The Eagles made three errors during a brief four-point spurt that helped the Lady Rams double their lead from four (11-7) to eight (15-7).

Olson had five of Philadelphia's 13 kills in the final set. With the set tied at 10, the Lady Rams when on a 14-5 run that propelled the team to victory.

Philadelphia welcomes Goldey-Beacom to the Gallagher Center Wednesday, Oct. 31 for a 7 p.m. match. A Lady Ram win gives the team a home match in the opening round of the CACC Tournament.
