Millersville, PA- The Philadelphia University
men's soccer team pushed #6 nationally-ranked Millersville
University to the brink- but fell just short in a 4-3 loss in their
season-opener. Three Rams scored one goal apiece, including
senior forward Svetozar Gladic (Novi Sad, Serbia)
who scored PhilaU's first goal of the game at 26:36 in the first
half.
Millersville got on the board first, at 8:31 with a goal by Matt
Wilson. Gladic's goal tied it up, until PhilaU rookie
defender Travis Lobb (Lititz, PA/ Manheim) gave
the Rams the go-ahead 2-1 with a shot off a free kick at 37:40.
The Marauders raged into the second half on a three-goal binge,
including two by Pat Baffuto who scored the game-winner at 78:27.
PhilaU's junior defender Wojciech Sliwinski
(Kenilworth, NJ/ David Brearley) would head the Ram's final goal at
81:48 off a free kick from sophomore Ryan Purnell
(Hamilton, Bermuda/ Berkeley Inst.), but that would be all the
maroon and gray could muster as they fell 4-3.
Senior goalie Buddy Custer (Cinnaminson, NJ/
Cinnaminson) had one save in 90 minutes of work, while MU's Matt
Langione also made one stop.
The Rams return to action on Monday (8/31) at Lincoln
University at 4:00 p.m.
