Softball Drops First Two Games to Open Season

DOVER, DE. - The Thomas Jefferson University softball team (0-2) started their 2024 campaign off with two losses to Delaware State University (2-0) on the road this afternoon in non-conference play.

GAME ONE – L 1-0
The Hornets scored the lone run of game one in the second inning as the first two batters for Delaware State hit doubles to prompt them to the 1-0 lead that was held for the rest of the match. Rozalee Negron gave the Rams their closest chance to scoring as, with one out in the top of the sixth, hit a triple to get the tying run set for the Rams. But a flyout to third baseman and a strike out swinging ended Jefferson's opportunity.

Delaware State threaten multiple score in the bottom of the sixth as the Hornets had runners on second and third base. Gianna DeLorenzo stopped the threat as she struck out both batters to give Jefferson an opportunity in the top of the seventh. The Rams grounded out and had a flyout to first basemen before getting a runner on base. But another flyout to center field ended the first contest for the Rams.

QUICK HITS
Rozalee Negron: 2-for-3
MacKenzie Ward: 2-for-3
Gianna DeLorenzo: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 5 SO

GAME TWO – L 4-2
The second game saw more scoring, with the Hornets running out to a 3-0 lead in the third. Delaware State, with a runner at third, brought in the first score off a batted ball to be up 1-0. With another Hornet back in scoring position, Delaware State had their batter hit a two-run homerun to go up 3-0.

Jefferson responded with a run in the bottom of the third. Claudia Alldred single to center field brought Sabrina Pastino to home plate, making it a 3-1 as the Rams still trailed. Alldred made her way to third base, however the Hornets had two grounded outs to maintain their two-score lead.

Another run in the bottom of the fifth off of a single up the middle put it up to 4-1 for the Hornets. As the Rams trailed, Bridget Shields started off the top of the sixth with a double to right field. She would advance to third on a stolen base and, with one out, successfully stole home to cut the lead at 4-2. Annalise Pudimott pinch ran for Jefferson, stole second base to give Jefferson another potential score only for a forced out and a strikeout swinging to end those plans.

The Rams had one more opportunity to tie and potentially take the lead as in the top of the seventh, with two out, Remy Smith held onto third base while Negron was the tying run at second base. Delaware State escaped as they grounded out to second on the last pitch, concluding the tight matchup for the Rams in defeat.
