ORLANDO, Fla. – The Thomas Jefferson University men's tennis team (21-5) had its greatest season in program history come to an end with a 4-0 defeat to fifth-ranked UIndy (22-2) in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships on the USTA National Campus. The Rams were seeded 14
th for the national tournament while the Greyhounds are the third seed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy earned a 6-3 victory at second doubles, breaking a 2-2 tie and winning four of the last five games. Jefferson looked to be in good shape at 3-1 in the third doubles match but the Greyhounds' pair rallied to claim five straight games to win 6-3 and clinch the doubles point for UIndy.
During the first set of singles action, a lightning delay forced the suspension of play. After nearly an hour, the teams returned to the court. However, just five minutes after resuming, another storm cell formed and caused the squads to leave the playing surface once again. Another two hours passed and it was determined that the match would need to be finished on the indoor courts.
The bouts continued and it took UIndy 30 minutes to clinch the match with straight-set victories at first, third, and sixth singles.
