Softball Bested By Georgian Court Twice

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University softball team (11-19, 5-11 CACC) was defeated twice by Georgian Court (26-14, 10-4 CACC) in a pair of conference contests on Sunday.

GAME ONE – L, 9-0 (6 inn.)
The Lions took a quick 3-0 lead in the first with two of the first three hitters smacking a triple and the fourth batter crushing a two-run homer. The Rams struggled to solve the Georgian Court pitcher, not reaching base until a one-out single in the fourth. For the game, Jefferson managed just two total hits. GCU exploded for six runs on five hits in the sixth and ended the contest early due to the eight-run rule.

Quick Hits
Winnai Hoyt: 1-for-3
Cayla Kalani: 1-for-2

GAME TWO – L, 7-5
The Lions carried the momentum into the nightcap, scoring twice in the opening inning on a pair of RBI singles. Georgian Court upped the advantage to three with an RBI double in the third.

The Rams were knocking on the door with four hits through the first four innings and finally broke through with four runs in the fifth to take the lead. Annie Eliason led off with a walk and Ali Murphy followed with a triple to put Jefferson on the board. Winnai Hoyt plated Murphy with a single and Emily Akelaitis singled to put runners at first and second. A groundout moved the runners up and Ellie Egher came through with a two-run, go-ahead double to right center.

The Rams' lead was short-lived, however, as GCU started the sixth with a single and a homer to regain the upper hand. The Lions tacked on another run during the frame and one more in the seventh to go ahead 7-4. Jefferson managed a run in the bottom of the seventh but could not get any closer.
