PHILADELPHIA – The #16/10 Thomas Jefferson University women's basketball team (25-3, 16-1 CACC) closed the regular season with a 65-59 victory against Holy Family (19-9, 13-4 CACC) on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers got off to a roaring start, taking a 14-4 lead in the opening quarter. Holy Family led by as many as 11 (21-10) in the period, shooting 58.8% (10-of-17) while the Rams converted just 38.9% (7-of-18) of their shots, and the Tigers went into the second with a 23-15 advantage.
Jefferson started the second quarter with a layup to cut the deficit to six (23-17) but Holy Family answered with six in a row to up the margin to 12 (29-17) with 8:10 on the clock. The Rams trailed by nine (33-24) at the 4:29 mark before rallying with an 8-0 run to end the half and close the gap to one (33-32) at the intermission.
The difference was four (38-34) in favor of the Tigers with 7:22 to go in the third quarter. Jefferson then took over with a 13-2 surge for a 47-40 advantage with 4:07 remaining.
Morgan Robinson led the way with nine points. Holy Family came back to get within two (49-47) before two free throws by Robinson made the score 51-47 heading into the final stanza.
The Rams still held a four-point cushion (55-51) with 5:21 to play in the fourth.
Haley Meinel drilled a three and
Sam Yencha made a layup to push the lead to nine (60-51). The Tigers got the deficit back to four (62-58) with 1:42 left. However, Holy Family missed its last three field goal attempts down the stretch.
