Lacrosse Drops Season Opener At Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Thomas Jefferson University women's lacrosse team (0-1) fell behind in the opening quarter and could not recover in a 17-13 season-opening loss at Bloomsburg (1-0) on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies won the first three draws of the game and were able to build a 3-0 lead within the first four minutes of play. Madison Caffrey got the Rams on the board with a free position goal at the 6:14 mark. However, Bloomsburg answered with another three straight tallies and led 6-1 at the end of the period.
 
The Huskies again dominated the draws to begin the second quarter and added three more goals in exactly 60 seconds to lead 9-1 with 14:00 on the clock. Jefferson was finally able to gain some momentum, responding with a 5-0 run to get within three (9-6) with 4:17 left in the half. Carina Raymond led the way with two goals while Ellie Lefton, Gabby Modzelewski, and Audrey Strock added one apiece. Bloomsburg cut the rally short, finishing the frame with a 3-1 stretch for a 12-7 advantage at halftime.
 
The Rams struck first in the third, with Erin Avanzato finding the back of the net to make the score 12-8. The Huskies came back with a pair of markers, one while a player down, to up the margin to six (14-8). Jefferson netted three in a row to close the gap to three again (14-11) with 7:46 to go in the period but Bloomsburg did not allow another goal for the rest of the quarter, adding one of its own to lead 15-11 heading into the final stanza.
 
The Huskies focused on defending and maintaining the advantage in the fourth and both squads managed just two goals each in the last quarter. Bloomsburg limited the Rams to just four shots in the period.
