NEWARK, Del. – A battle between two of the top three teams in the CACC standings on Wednesday came to a stalemate as the Thomas Jefferson University men's soccer team (4-4-2, 3-0-2 CACC) and host Wilmington (5-2-3, 4-0-1 CACC) played to a 1-1 draw.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded chances over the opening 10 minutes before the Rams had a sustained effort that resulted in a goal. After three missed shots and a corner kick, Jefferson earned a throw on the left sideline in the Wildcats' end. The throw was eventually headed down by
Diego Guzman towards the left post and
Noah Stover was able to get enough of the ball to send it across the goal line for a 1-0 Rams' lead in the 17
th minute.
After the Jefferson tally, it was all Wilmington for the remainder of the first half as the Wildcats outshot the Rams by an 8-0 count. The Jefferson defense held, however, blocking two shots and clearing another out of the goal mouth.
Matteo Crescente also made three saves.
Wilmington controlled the second half, registering an 11-3 advantage in shots. The Wildcats' attack finally came through in the 76
th minute when they netted the equalizer off a corner kick. Wilmington continued to pressure in the final minutes but Crescente stopped both shots that found their way on net. The Rams also put a late shot on target but it was turned away by the goalkeeper.
