PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University softball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, including a two-run, walk-off double by
Emily Akelaitis, and the Rams wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader split against Caldwell on Saturday. They are 17-9 on the campaign.
Jefferson is locked into the fourth seed for the CACC Tournament. The Rams will host 13
th-seeded Chestnut Hill for a first-round game on Wednesday, May 5 at a time to be determined.
GAME ONE – L, 6-0
The Cougars' pitching was dominant in the opener, holding Jefferson to just one baserunner which came on an infield single in the second by
Sam Gomez. Offensively, Caldwell produced five runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles, an RBI groundout, and a two-run double. The Cougars added a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.
GAME TWO – W, 4-3
The teams left a combined 13 runners on base through the first four innings as the game remained scoreless. Caldwell broke through for a run in the fifth on an error. The Cougars added a two-run homer in the seventh for a 3-0 lead.
Down three heading into their final at-bat, the Rams started the bottom of the seventh with a line out but
Julia Heine followed with an infield single.
Sage Bolonski singled to center to put runners at first and second. After a strikeout, Jefferson was down to its final out.
Not to be deterred,
Dallas Urban came up and hit an RBI single to center to make it 3-1 and put runners at first and third.
Ali Murphy knocked in Bolonski with a base hit through the left side and there were runners at first and second in a 3-2 game.
Emily Akelaitis then smacked a two-run, walk-off double to left center to finish off the comeback and give Jefferson an improbable victory.
