Softball Drops Wednesday CACC Road Doubleheader to Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (13-17, 9-9 CACC) fell in a pair of conference games to the Caldwell Cougars (19-13, 13-1 CACC) from Caldwell Field in Caldwell, N.J. on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams dropped game one, 6-4, before falling in game two, 9-3.

WEDNESDAY GAME ONE – L, 6-4
The Rams attempted a late comeback in game one of two at Caldwell on Wednesday afternoon before falling, 6-4.

Caldwell scored one run in the third before four runs in the fifth to go up 5-0.

Sophomore Breck Urban hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to make the score 5-2 before the Cougars tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning via an RBI single.

Trailing by four with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Rams were down to their last out. Sophomore Medison Heno and senior Erica D'Angelo then hit back-to-back solo home runs to pull Jefferson within two, 6-4. But a groundout ended the Jefferson comeback as the Rams dropped game one.

Junior Stephanie Pepper (L, 7-6) pitched a complete game loss for the Rams. She stuck out four across 6.0 innings with one walk.

WEDNESDAY GAME TWO – L, 9-3
Caldwell took a 3-0 after two runs in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second. A double from D'Angelo scored freshman Taylor Maroon in the third before an RBI ground from sophomore Emily Williams brought home Heno to cut the deficit down to one, 3-2.

But a five-run third from the Cougars gave them an 8-2 lead before they added another in the fourth to go up 9-2.

Emily Bradley (L, 1-2)took the loss in the start as she pitched a complete-game, six-inning effort with two strikeouts. Only two of the nine runs against her were earned as the defense committed four errors behind her.

Jefferson got one back in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Katelyn Stys, but it was not enough as the Rams' lost, 9-3.
