Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to USciences in CACC Championship Final

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (26-5) suffered a heartbreaking 64-56 loss to the USciences Devils (28-3) on Sunday afternoon from the Gallagher Center in the CACC Championship Final.

The win gives USciences the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Jefferson will now wait until 10 p.m. on Sunday night when the NCAA DII Women's Basketball Committee announces the 64-team field for the 2018 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship on NCAA.com.

Redshirt sophomore Alynna Williams and redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski were both named to the 2018 CACC All-Tournament team after the finals loss.

Williams finished the afternoon with a game-high 23 points as she went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds.

Kaminski scored nine points with five rebounds and one assist.

The Rams held the Devils to just nine points in the first quarter. Jefferson grabbed its largest lead of the afternoon, 22-11, with 6:40 to play in the second quarter.

From there, the Devils were able to close the gap with a 14-3 run to tie the game at 25-all.

USciences took a 29-28 lead into halftime.

The Devils came out hot in the third quarter, shooting 7-of-13 with four three-pointers to take a 10-point lead heading into the fourth, 53-43.

Jefferson tried to get back into the game, but USciences kept matching them basket for basket.

A five-minute scoring drought by the Devils gave the Rams a late chance. Jefferson was able to string together a six-point run to get within four with 1:55 to play, 58-54, after a jump shot from redshirt junior Erin Maher in the paint.

Both teams then hit a pair of free throws to keep the margin the same in favor of the Devils, 60-56.

USciences held on for the win after two more trips to the line, 64-56.

The Devils made just two shots in the final quarter but went 6-of-8 from the free-throw line to get the win.

In total, Jefferson shot 34.6% from the floor (18-of-52), 4-of-19 from deep (21.1%) and 80.0% from the line (16-of-20).
