PHILADELPHIA – Elizabeth Seitzinger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) scored on a free-position shot 37 seconds into overtime to give the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team a season-opening 12-11 victory over Millersville in a non-conference match on Ravenhill Field.

Free-position goals were the key to the Rams' (1-0) victory as they turned eight of their 14 attempts, including Seitzinger's winner, into goals. Meanwhile, Philadelphia only conceded three free-position opportunities to Millersville (2-1). The Marauders scored on just one of those chances.

Katie Parent's (Millville, N.J./Millville) first goal of the season, on an entry feed from Seitzinger, tied the match at 10 with 6:38 remaining in regulation. Liz Mower (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) capped a seven-point performance with her fifth goal of the afternoon, a free-position shot playing a player up, to put Philadelphia in front at 2:53.

The Rams remained in front until Millersville's Bridget Hufnagel found Sabrina Fusco unguarded on the left side of the crease with 16 seconds left. Fusco snuck her shot inside the post to send the match to overtime.

Seitzinger, who finished the match with three goals and one assist, played the role of hero as she buried her free position shot over the right shoulder of Millersville goalie Bryana Weston-Wyatt, who had 13 saves.

Corrine Etter (Millville, N.J./Millville) contributed three first-half goals to the Philadelphia offense.

Madeline Haas (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) and Mower both recorded four ground balls, while Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) racked up three ground balls, three draw controls, and caused three turnovers. In goal, Maria Matteis (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) recorded eight saves.

Millersville had control of the contest during the early stages, scoring four of the first five goals—two from Fusco—to take a 4-1 lead. Philadelphia took advantage of three free-position attempts, scoring on all three, to knot the score at four. Seitzinger, Mower, and Etter scored during the rally.

After the Marauders reclaimed a two-goal cushion, Etter put home a free-position shot at 2:25 to bring the Rams within one and Mower scored 59 seconds later to even the match at six.

Philadelphia took its first lead of the afternoon on a Mower free-position goal 6:08 into the second half that made the score 8-7. Millersville ran off three of the next four goals, including one a player down, to move back in front 10-9.

Fusco led Millersville with five goals and one assist, while Renee Landis had two goals and three assists. Hufnagel added two goals and two assists.

Philadelphia will take on another Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference school when it heads to West Chester for a non-conference tilt on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
