Young leads Rams to road win at Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. – Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) poured in a career-high 28 points as the Philadelphia University women's basketball team turned in a dominating fourth quarter performance to pick up a 69-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory against Goldey-Beacom Wednesday night in the West Center.

Young played all 40 minutes and shot 10-of-16 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. She added five steals, four rebounds, and two assists.

Philadelphia (14-5, 10-0 CACC) —who entered the contest 0-4 when trailing at halftime—came out for the third quarter down 41-34. Young drained two free throws, as part of an 11-point quarter, with 7:00 left to bring the Rams within 45-41. After Goldey-Beacom (5-14, 5-5 CACC) took an eight-point lead on a Tanner Turner-Rush basket, Philadelphia scored the eight of the final 10 points of the quarter, capped off by a Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) layup with four seconds on the clock, to close the gap to 53-51.

The fourth quarter was all Philadelphia as the Rams outscored the Lightning 18-4 to walk away with the victory. Philadelphia trailed 55-51 until Young knocked down a jumper with 8:36 left in the contest to spark a 13-0 run that would give the Rams a 66-55 advantage.  Jessica Kaminski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored five of her 10 points during the run.

The Rams' defense was the key to the quarter, holding the Lightning to 2-of-17 shooting from the floor, 0-of-6 from 3-point range.

Philadelphia got baskets from four different players to sprint out to a quick 8-0 lead in the opening 3:12. Goldey-Beacom managed to cut the Philadelphia advantage to two (11-9), but the Rams led after the first quarter 20-16.

Philadelphia had a strong start to the second quarter, scoring the first six points to widen the gap to 26-16 on a Young layup at the 8:27 mark. The rest of the quarter belonged to Goldey-Beacom as the Lightning hit six 3-pointers, three from Lexi Bruno, to outscore the Rams 25-8 over the final 7:20 to lead by seven at the half.

Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Arnao was the game's top rebounder with 13.

Bruno paced Goldey-Beacom with 20 points, while Mikila Stefanski scored 17.

Philadelphia shot 48.1 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from 3-point range. Goldey-Beacom hit 32.3 percent of its attempts, 31.3 percent of their 3-pointers. The Rams owned a 41-32 rebounding edge.

Philadelphia will look for its ninth straight win when the team heads to Post for a CACC contest on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
