Softball falls twice to Caldwell

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team was defeated twice by visiting Caldwell University, 8-0 and 11-3, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Philadelphia is now 14-16 overall, 7-5 in the CACC, while Caldwell improves to 11-9 overall and 5-1 against the conference.

GAME ONE
The Cougars did all of their damage in the third inning, sending 13 batters to the plate, and scoring eight times on eight hits. Brielle Reighn recorded two RBI base hits during the inning, a double for Caldwell's first run and a single to make the score 8-0.

After loading the bases with one out, Kiahna Silva and Amy Hickman recorded RBI singles, Lauren Frye was hit by a pitch, and Kristen Knorr contributed a two-run double. Caitlin McCready added a run producing base hit.

Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills), Erin Maher (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), and Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) each had one hit for the Rams. Reighn and McCready were both 3-for-3 to pace Caldwell, who had 10 in the game.

Amber Padillia was the winning pitcher, striking out one and allowed two hits in four innings.

Smith took the complete game loss. She pitched her way out of a first and third with one out situation in the first and a second and third and one out jam in the second. Smith, who posted two strikeouts, ended the game retiring the last six hitters she faced.

GAME TWO
Caldwell jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings with one run in the first inning and three in the third and fourth innings. After getting a Alyssa Calderon single to open the scoring, Marisa Moinasseri hit a two-run home run and Knorr drew a bases loaded walk in the third to push the lead to 4-0.

Kortney Craker connected for a three-run home run, as part of a 2-for-2 game, to make the score 7-0 in the fourth.

Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) got Philadelphia on the board in the last of the fourth with a two-out single to left field to play Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area).

Caldwell came back in the fifth with four runs, two on a Calderon homer to center field, to extend the lead 11-1.

Philadelphia pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the fifth on a Mollie Burrell sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II), Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), and Levins had a hit for the Rams.

Calderon was 3-for-3 for Caldwell, while Monasseri was 2-for-2.

Sydney Ponto went four innings, struck out four, and allowed one unearned run on three runs to earn the win. Kakareka was the losing pitcher, giving up four runs in three innings.

Philadelphia heads to Bloomfield for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m.
