Softball drops two to Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Philadelphia University softball team was swept by host Bloomfield in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader, 2-1 in eight innings and 8-4, Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE
Shannon Brennan delivered the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the home half of the eighth inning for the Bears (19-13, 9-7 CACC). Angela Hauser capped a 2-for-3 game by reaching base with a leadoff single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Hauser scored on the Brennan base hit.

Philadelphia (14-18, 7-7 CACC) took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out error on a ball hit by Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) that scored Mariah Hans (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights), who singled to start the inning, from third. The Bears came back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning when Hauser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Rams had six hits, two each from Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.), and Hans. Bloomfield had 10 hits.

Kirsten Wilson threw five scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing three hits, in relief of Stephanie Miller to earn the win. Abromavage struck out two in a complete-game loss.

GAME TWO
Bloomfield broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the home half of the third with a pair of runs. Lauren Bueno knocked in the game's first run with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher and Wilson doubled the lead with a single to right.

Philadelphia got a run back in the fourth as Gabrielle Brown (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) to make the score 2-1.

The Bears increased their lead to 7-1 with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Brennan had a two-run single with two outs in the fifth. Kelly Stites, Bayley Legarreta, and Bueno added one RBI each.

Philadelphia opened the sixth inning with three straight batters getting hit by a pitch and turned that into three runs. Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) and Monica Levins () scored on a throwing error by Aubrey Orr. Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) closed the gap to 7-4 with a RBI groundout to knock in Hans.

Bloomfield outhit Philadelphia, 11-2. Abromavage and Kakareka had one hit each for the Rams. Angela Hauser was 3-for-4 to lead the Bears.

Miller was the winning pitcher, allowing three unearned runs on one hit over 5.1 innings. Troisi struck out two over three innings, and surrendered two runs on four in a losing effort.

Philadelphia returns home to take on Dominican (N.Y.) in a CACC doubleheader on Sunday, April 12 at noon.
