Women's lacrosse pulls away from Wilmington, 12-9

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team scored three times in the 11:09 to defeat visiting Wilmington (Del.) 12-9 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Wednesday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.

Philadelphia (4-5, 3-1 CACC) held a 9-6 advantage until Wilmington (3-7, 2-2 CACC) rallied off three consecutive goals to tie the match midway through the second half. Rebekah McCurry-Larson started the run with back-to-back goals. The first goal came on a free-position shot at 18:18 and her second, third overall, was scored with the Wildcats playing shorthanded at 16:06. Madeline Hewitt converted a free-position shot to tie the match at nine with 12:45 to play.

Corrine Etter (Millville, N.J./Millville) stopped Wilmington surge as she pushed her way through the Wildcat defense and beat Corinne Dries to cap a two-goal, one assist game and put Philadelphia ahead 10-9. Just 90 seconds after entering the match for the first time, Lauren Hartman (Sewell, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) made her presence felt, scoring her 5:39 left to extend the margin to two. Liz Mower's (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) third goal of the match with 1:01 to go provided the final margin.

After Ashley Kroll scored 1:09 the contest to put the visitors up, Philadelphia received goals from Mower, Elizabeth Seitzinger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and Isabella DiGnazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Twp.) in a 6:52 span to take a 3-1 lead.

Wilmington's Sara LeBrun closed the Rams' advantage 4-3, with an assist from Madeline Hewitt. Elizabeth Marrosu (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) scored both her goals in the final 5:20 of the half to extend the cushion to three.

DiGnazio's second goal of the match and Etter's first, coming in the opening 4:34 of the second half, gave Philadelphia a match-high 8-3 lead.

Mower ended the match with four points, while Seitzinger recorded two goals, one assist, and five ground balls.

Felician Branagan (Millville, N.J./Millville) earned her second win of the year (2-0) with an 11-save performance. Dries stopped 13 shots for Wilmington.

Philadelphia hosts Holy Family in a non-conference match on Thursday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m.
