Troisi leads softball to spilt with Georgian Court

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team split its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Georgian Court Sunday afternoon. The Rams took the opener 3-1 and the Lions posted a 5-1 win in the second game.

GAME ONE
Pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) tossed a complete-game five hitter, which included two strikeouts, to record her third win of the season (3-3). The lone blemish against Troisi came in the form of a two-out RBI single by Meghan Sfraga single in the second inning to tie the game at one. She retired seven batters in a row from the third through the fifth.

Philadelphia (7-11, 4-2 CACC) got out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first on a Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) single, combined with a throwing error by Georgian Court pitcher Abby Merryman, that brought Stephanie Martin () home from second.

Mariah Hans (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights allowed the Rams to regain the lead in the third with a base hit to center that plated Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson)—who singled and stole second to start the inning—to make the score 2-1.

With Rams on first and third and one out in the sixth, Weaver beat out a ball she hit back to Merryman for a single and had Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) score from third to tack on an insurance run.

Philadelphia recorded eight hits, two from Weaver. Stefanie Aplin had two hits in three at-bats for the Lions (6-18, 5-1 CACC).

Merryman allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out three in a losing effort.

GAME TWO
Georgian Court took a 4-0 lead on one swing of the bat in the first inning when JoLei Buonanno hit a Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam. Dara Schroeder added the Lions' fifth run on a RBI ground out in the fourth inning.

Philadelphia broke the shutout in the last of the seventh on an Abromavage RBI single.

Katie Sorochka was the winning pitcher after allowing four hits over seven innings. Abromavage struck out four in a losing effort.

Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills), Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson), Abromavage, and Haley had one hit each.

Philadelphia returns to action with a home CACC doubleheader against USciences on Tuesday, March 31 at 2:30 p.m.
