Softball earns split of conference twinbill at Wilmington

NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Philadelphia University softball team picked up a split of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Wilmington University on Thursday. The Wildcats won the opener 10-1 and the Rams recovered to earn a 2-1 win the second contest.

Philadelphia is now 6-10 overall and 3-1 against the CACC. The game two victory snapped the Rams' three-game losing streak. Wilmington's record goes to 12-11 overall, 3-5 in conference play

In the opener, Wilmington built up a 7-0 advantage after four innings of play. Kaitlyn Slater was responsible for the first two runs of the contest with a one-out, two-run home run in the first inning. One inning later, Kelsey Doherty knocked in two runs with a double and Slater tacked on another run with a RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0. In the fourth, Camrbia Ziemba had a run producing double and Colby Wyatt added a RBI base hit.

The Rams got a run back in the top of the sixth when Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) came through with a two-out double to right center to drive in Mariah Hans (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights)—who singled to lead off the inning.

Wilmington ended the contest with two two-out hits, a RBI single from Slater and a Wyatt two-run homer.

Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach), Hans and Smith all had two hits for the Rams—who had seven in the game. Wilmington had 12 hits, including a 4-for-4 game by Slater.

Chelsea Botsch struck out eight in recording the complete game victory. Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

Philadelphia played small ball to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Haley opened the game with a single and was sacrificed to second by Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough). After a strike out, Smith delivered a two-out single to right to bring home Haley for the first run of the game.

The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when the Rams got a two-out double from Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) and a RBI double from Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) in the next at bat to double the advantage to 2-0.

Wilmington got its run in the sixth with a two-out single off the bat of Wyatt.

Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) scattered seven hits and struck out one to record the complete game win (3-1). Brooke Lachette was tagged with the loss as she gave up two runs on five hits in four innings.

Levins had two of Philadelphia's five hits.

Philadelphia heads to Nyack for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 at noon.
