Etter nets five in women's lacrosse 17-15 loss to Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Freshman attack Corrine Etter (Millville, N.J./Millville) scored a career-high five goals for the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team in a 17-15 non-conference loss to Millersville on Thursday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Attack Elizabeth Marrosu (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) added four goals, while freshman attack Kathryn Avanzato (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) contributed four points (three goals, one assist).

Samantha Ryder (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), Liz Mower (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), and Elizabeth Seitzinger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) scored once. Midfielder Katie Parent (Millville, N.J./Millville) pitched in with five ground balls, five draw controls, and five caused turnovers.

The Rams (0-3) got out to a fast start with goals from Seitzinger and Marrosu in the opening 2:10. Millersville (2-1) answered the early goals with eight of the nine, three from Bridget Hufnagel, to move ahead 8-3. Hannah Vogel added two goals.

Philadelphia closed the gap to 8-5 with two goals separated by 27 seconds. Etter's second goal of the game came at 1:43. Marrosu converted free-position shot with 1:16 left in the half.

Madison Long closed the half out with two goals in the final 35 seconds to help the Marauders regain their five-goal cushion (10-5).

Philadelphia put together a late rally over the 9:38. Trailing 17-12, Ryder started the surge with a free-position goal to cut the gap to 17-13. At the 7:53 mark, Etter's fifth goal pulled the team within three. Mower found the back of the net on a free-position shot to make it a 17-15 game. The rally fell short as Philadelphia was held without a shot over the final 2:49.

Renee Landis led Millersville with seven points (four goals, three assists) and two ground balls. Hufnagel added four goals, one assist, three draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Taylor Davis contributed three goals, six draw controls, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Shannon Davis stopped 10 shots for Millersville, while Philadelphia's Maria Matteis (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) made five saves.

Philadelphia's next game is its home opener on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
