Women's lacrosse falls in season opener to Dowling 11-6

SHIRLEY, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team opened its 2015 season with an 11-6 non-conference loss to Dowling Saturday afternoon on Golden Lions Field.

Lauren Hartman (Sewell, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) posted a team-high five points with one goal and four assists. Elizabeth Seitzinger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) added two goals, one draw control, and one caused turnover.

Philadelphia (1-0) got off to a strong start, getting goals from Seitzinger, Isabella DiGnazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Twp.), and Elizabeth Marrosu (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) to take a 3-0 lead in the opening 11:43. Hartman picked up an assist on all three goals.

After Dowling's Kelly McQuail and Philadelphia's Liz Mower (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) traded goals, the Golden Lions (2-0) scored five straight times over the final 13:36 to grab a 6-4 halftime advantage. Jackie Andersen had two goals, while Katie Meinecke notched one goal and two assists.

Andersen and Allie Merrill kicked off the second half with goals to extend the Dowling lead to 8-4. Hartman recorded an unassisted goal at the 23:37 mark to pull the Rams within 8-5.

With Dowling in front 10-5 after goals from Andersen and Meinecke, Allison Brian (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) found of the back of the net for the first time this season with 10:43 remaining.

Andersen recorded four goals, four ground balls, and two caused tunovers for the Golden Lions. Merrill added three goals and caused turnovers, while Meinecke finished with two goals, three assists, and four draw controls.

Maria Matteis (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) stopped a career-high 12 shots for the Rams, while the Golden Lions' made eight saves.

Philadelphia returns to action on Saturday, March 7 at No. 1 Adelphi at 3 p.m.
