Strong third quarter pushes women's basketball past Wilmington

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team had five players score in double figures as the Rams pulled away from host Wilmington (Del.) in the third quarter to pick up a 79-70 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory Tuesday night in the WU Athletics Complex.

Philadelphia (6-3, 4-0 CACC) trailed 39-37 after Wilmington's Lindsay Bradford made a layup 1:10 into the second half. Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop) scored five straight points, a 3-pointer and a layup separated by 42 seconds, to start a 12-4 surge that put the Rams in front 49-43. Day knocked down a second 3-pointer during the run as part of her 10 third-quarter points.

After the Wildcats closed the gap to 51-49 on a Jordan Hawkins layup, the Rams would outscore the home team 8-0 over the final 2:24 to take a 59-49 lead into the fourth. The Rams defense forced the Wildcats to miss their final four shots of the quarter and commit two turnovers.

Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) scored the first two points of the final quarter to extend the Philadelphia advantage to a game-high 12 points (61-49).

Wilmington (5-4, 1-2 CACC) managed to cut the Philadelphia lead down to four (66-62) thanks to a 11-3 run, capped off by an Ebonee Dixon layup with 5:48 left to play.

Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) made basket and Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) hit two free throws to kill the Wilmington momentum and push the Philadelphia lead back up to 70-62.

After Wilmington got within 75-70, Philadelphia was able to finish off the game by shooting 4-of-6 from the free throw line and not allowing the Wildcats to make any of their last five shots.

Day and Arnao led the Rams in scoring with 18 points each. Jessica Kaminski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs.

Young ended up with 17 points, 12 in the opening half, while Newell had 12 points.

Philadelphia overcame an 11-2 first quarter deficit, with the help of six Young points, to lead 17-16 at the break. Wilmington erased a 32-22 Philadelphia lead to send the game to the half tied at 35.

Macy Robinson came off the bench to pace the Wildcats with 16 points. Bradford had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Philadelphia returns to the Gallagher Center to face Shippensburg in a non-conference contest on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
