Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) racked up 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Philadelphia University women's basketball team as the Rams picked up a gritty 46-42 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival the University of the Sciences Wednesday night in the Gallagher Center.
The contest was a nip-and-tuck affair for all 40 minutes, with the largest lead of the night coming on Jessica Kaminski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) layup with 16 seconds left in the half to give Philadelphia (1-2, 1-0 CACC) a 20-15 lead. The game featured 11 lead changes and seven ties.
Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) added 11 points in the victory, while Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) contributed 10 points.
After Philadelphia's lead fluctuated between three and five for most of the third quarter, Megan Wolf hit two free throws with 4:35 left in the quarter to spark an 11-5 run, which Wolf capped off with a 3-pointer, to give USciences (0-3, 0-1 CACC) a 32-28 lead at the 2:23 mark.
The Rams scored five of the first seven points of the final quarter to reclaim a 35-34 advantage on a Kaminski 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 7:50 left. With the score tied at 39, Young went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line to put back in front. A Kaminski jumper and two more Young free throws pushed the lead back up to five (44-39) with just 22 seconds remaining.
After Sarah Abbonizio knocked down a 3-pointer to close the margin to two, Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) drained two clutch free throws with five seconds left to seal the win.
Philadelphia shot 48.0 percent from the field, while USciences was held to 24.2 percent. The Devils owned a 45-36 rebounding advantage, 19-7 on the offensive glass.
The Devils' Alex Thomas led all scorers with 17 points. Abbonizio added 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Rams continue their season-opening five-game home stand with a non-conference tilt against the University of Bridgeport on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
