Box Score NEWARK, Del. – Four Philadelphia University women's basketball players scored in double figures as the Rams picked up a 71-53 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over host Wilmington (Del.) Wednesday night.
Philadelphia moves to 11-1 overall, including wins in its last seven, and 5-1 against the CACC. Wilmington is now 3-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Forwards Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) each recorded a double-double for the Rams. Heck posted 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Arnao recorded 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) had 13 points, a career-best seven assists, and six steals. Guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) poured in 11 points.
The opening 5:16 was a back-and-forth affair with the teams swapping the lead four times.
Trailing 8-6, Schacker hit a free throw at the 14:14 mark to spark a run of 12 straight Philadelphia points over a 4:26 stretch to give the Rams an 18-8 lead. The Philadelphia defense stepped up in a big way during the surge, forcing eight Wilmington turnovers. Young recorded nine points and three steals in the run.
The Wildcats were able to bounce back with a 10-4 spurt to quickly close the gap to 22-18 on an Ebonee Dixon three-point play with 7:51 left in the half.
Philadelphia scored six consecutive points late in the first half to take 37-24 advantage, its largest of the half, on a Young layup with 1:06 on the clock.
The Rams put the contest away, outscoring the Wildcats 25-8 in the opening 10:10 to take a game-high 27-point lead (62-34) on a Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) layup. Schacker, Arnao, and Heck all scored six points in the run. Once again, the Rams defense played in a big role as the Wildcats shot 4-of-15 from the field and turned the ball over three times.
Tenicia Spence hit four 3-pointers to pace Wilmington with 14 points.
Philadelphia heads to the University of the Sciences for a CACC battle on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m.
