Softball falls twice to Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Philadelphia University softball team was dropped both ends of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to host Georgian Court, 9-1 in five innings and 4-1, Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia is now 15-7 overall and 6-6 in the CACC. Georgian Court moves its record to 19-12 overall and 13-1 against the conference.

Sophomore catcher Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) led the Philadelphia offense with a team-high four hits in five at-bats. She had two hits in each game.

GAME ONE

Taylor McDonough led the Lions 10-hit attack with three hits in three at-bats, four RBIs, and two runs scored.

Georgian Court jumped out to a 5-0 lead as it scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. McDonough had one RBI in each inning with a double in the first and a single in the second.

Philadelphia attempted to get itself back in the game as the Rams loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning. Freshman first baseman Gabrielle Brown (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) worked a walk off of Abigail Merryman to plate junior pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) to close the gap to 5-1.

Merryman fought back to strike out the next two batters to end the Rams' threat.

In the bottom of the fourth, McDonough extended the Lions lead to 7-1.with a two-out, two-run home run.

Georgian Court ended the game with two runs in the fifth on a Bryana Smith sacrifice fly and a Dara Schroeder single.

Briana Molino and Schroeder were 2-for-3 in the opener.

Merryman was the winning pitcher (7-3) as she struck out four while allowing the one run on six hits in five innings. Triosi took the loss (5-3), allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits in 1.2 innings.

GAME TWO

Led by two hits each from junior shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), senior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) and Burrell, the Rams outhit the Lions 9-7.

Consecutive RBI singles from Justine Mattia and Smith in the bottom of the second got Georgian Court out to a 2-0 lead.

McDonough added to the home team's advantage in the third with a two-out single that scored Alyssa Paradiso from second.

With the help of a Georgian Court error, Philadelphia got on the board in the fifth to cut its deficit to 3-1. After freshman left fielder Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) opened the inning with a single, junior right fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) singled to the pitcher and was ended up getting caught in a rundown. While this was going on Weaver headed toward third. In an attempt to cut down Weaver, Deanna Deluise's throw went wide and allowed Weaver to score.

Georgian Court got the run back on a McDonough RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Daluise struck out nine in a complete-game winning effort (8-6). Sophomore pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) suffered the loss (3-3) as she gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings.

Philadelphia returns home to face Lincoln (Pa.) in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 7 at 2:30 p.m.
