Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – A three-run top of the seventh inning helped the Philadelphia University softball erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat host Molloy 4-2 in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Lions outslugged the Rams for a 9-8 game two win.
With the split, Philadelphia moves its overall record to 19-8, matching last season's win total. Molloy is now 17-14 overall.
GAME ONE
Philadelphia trailed 2-0 after Molloy scored single runs in the first and third innings.
The Rams got one back in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by freshman first baseman Gabrielle Brown (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin).
Freshman pinch hitter Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson) led off the seventh with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.
After senior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and third with one out, junior designated player Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) singled to center to plate Letos to tie the game at two.
Brown came to the plate with two runners on base and delivered a two-out infield single that brought home Riabko and Abromavage to put the Rams in the lead, 4-2.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Corey (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) kept the Lions off the board in the last of the seventh to lock down the win.
Tracey Balinskas put Molloy ahead 1-0 with a first-inning sacrifice fly and doubled the lead to 2-0 with a RBI double in the third.
Freshman third baseman Meghan Loughery (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) and junior left fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) led the Rams' 11-hit attack with three hits each.
Brenda Lee had two hits for Molloy
Corey earned her second win of the year (2-0) by scattering six hits over seven innings and fanning one.
Samantha Sauer took the loss (1-3), allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits in two innings.
GAME TWO
Philadelphia pushed four runs across in the top half of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore catcher Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) tied the game one with a one-out single to left field. Two batters later, sophomore designated player Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) put the Rams in front with a double to center.
Loughery brought home freshman left fielder Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) with the help of an throwing error to extend the lead to 3-1. Junior shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) drove in the Rams' fourth run with a sacrifice fly.
Molloy came back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to move in front 6-4. Lauren Alexander pulled the Lions within one with a ground-rule double to center field that brought home two runs.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Lee cleared the bases with a double to left center to put Molloy in the lead.
The teams traded three runs in the fourth inning. Martin hit a two-run home run—her first of the year—in the top of the inning and Erin Clinton connected for a three-run homer in the bottom half of the frame.
Philadelphia scored once in the top of the seventh on a single by junior pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II).
Martin, Riabko, and Kakareka all had two hits each for Philadelphia. Molloy's Nicolette Sinagra went 3-for-3 and scored three times.
Chelsea Hawkes earned the win (7-6) in a relief effort. She allowed three runs on four hits and fanned five in 4.1 innings. Sauer went the final 1.1 innings to get the save.
Troisi suffered the loss (5-4), allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. She struck out four batters.
Philadelphia heads to Chestnut Hill for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15 at 2 p.m.
