Pitching, timely hitting carries softball to 3-1 win at Dominican (N.Y.)

Box Score

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) turned in a strong complete-game performance and senior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenago Valley) came through with the go-ahead home run in the sixth to lift the Philadelphia University softball team to a 3-1 win over Dominican (N.Y.) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game Friday afternoon.

With the victory, Philadelphia improves to 16-7 overall and 7-6 in CACC play. Dominican falls to 7-18 overall, 5-6 against the conference.

The second game was not played because of darkness and will be rescheduled for a later date. The Rams had bus issues that forced game one to start two hours later than the original start time.

Smith (4-3) kept the host Chargers off-balance throughout the game, allowing just four hits over the seven innings and fanned six hitters. The lone blemish against Smith was an unearned run that scored in the third on a RBI double by Shannon Haukap.

The game remained 1-0 until Philadelphia put together a two-out rally in the sixth.

Junior catcher Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) kept the inning alive by hitting a double to left field. Lewis followed up with her team-leading fourth home run of the season to put the Rams ahead 2-1.

Freshman shortstop Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with a bases-loaded single to right to plate senior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.)

Six different Rams had one hit in the victory.

Haukap led the Chargers with two hits.

Elizabeth Hogan took the loss (3-7) for Dominican. She allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four in 6.1 innings.

Philadelphia returns home to face Bloomsburg in a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 at noon.
