Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore catcher Mollie Burrell's (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) two-run single in the fourth inning of game one propelled the Philadelphia University softball team to a 2-1 win and a split of Thursday afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against visiting Wilmington. The Wildcats took the nightcap 14-1 in six innings.
Philadelphia is now 14-2 overall and 5-1 in CACC play, while Wilmington's overall record is 9-13, 3-1 against the conference.
GAME ONE
The Rams faced a 1-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the fourth thanks to an Ashley Bennett two-out RBI single in top half of the frame.
Junior shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) opened the home half of the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by sophomore right fielder Kasia Smith (Wadel, Ariz./Estrella Foothills). Sophomore pitcher Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) kept the inning alive with a two-out single to load the bases for Burrell.
Burrell deposited a Stephanie Sarris offering into center field to bring around Martin and Smith to put the Rams in the lead.
Troisi made the one-run lead hold up as she only allowed one batter to reach base, a Katrina Swank two-out single in the seventh, over the final three innings. She finished the game with five strikeouts and earned the complete-game victory (4-1). Troisi gave up one run on five hits and walked two.
At the plate, Troisi had two of the Rams' six hits.
Sarris fanned seven while allowing two runs on six hits in six innings in a losing effort (3-4).
Kelsey Doherty went 3-for-3 for the Wildcats.
GAME TWO
Philadelphia was able to take advantage of a pair of Wilmington miscues in the third inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
With one out, sophomore right fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) swung and missed a low pitch for a strikeout, but the ball bounced away from Michelle Panasiti and Kakareka was able to negate the out by safely sprinting to first without a throw .
After a single by freshman third baseman Meghan Loughery put runners at first and second, Martin hit a ground ball to third base and Jen Fischbach's throw to first was wild and went out of play. The error allowed Kakareka to score Philadelphia's run.
Wilmington pounced a half-inning later, scoring five times in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Bennett had the big blow of the inning, a two-run home run over the left center field fence that made it a 4-1 game.
The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the fifth with RBI singles from Benett and Logullo to extend their lead to 7-1.
In the sixth inning, Wilmington sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored seven times on seven hits to push the gap to 14-1. The Wildcats strung together four two-out RBI hits, including a two-run double off the bat of Becca Stanley.
Loughery had both of Philadelphia's hits in the loss.
The Wildcats pounded out 21 hits, four each from Logullo and Fischbach. Bennett was 3-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs.
Colby Wyatt earned the win (2-1) as she allowed just the unearned run on two hits and struck out four in five innings.
Smith (3-1) took the loss for the Rams.
Philadelphia returns to action with a CACC doubleheader against visiting Nyack on Saturday, March 29 at noon.
