Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) scored a career-high 29 points to help the Philadelphia University women's basketball team knock off visiting Wilmington (Del.) 82-73 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game and clinch a spot in the CACC Tournament Wednesday night in the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia increases its season-best winning streak to six and improves to 14-5 overall, 12-0 in CACC play. The Rams tied the program record of 12 consecutive CACC wins set by the 2005-06 squad.
Wilmington is now 6-15 overall and 3-11 in the CACC.
Jacobs had a phenomenal night as the free throw line as she connected on her first 17 attempts and finished up with a CACC record 18 made free throws on 19 attempts. She shot 5-of-8 from the floor in 33 minutes of action.
Sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) recorded her team-leading seven double-double of the year with a 15-point, 12-rebound performance. Sophomore forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) posted a double-double for the second straight game with 11 points and 10 rebounds in tonight's win.
The teams went back-and-forth at the start, trading the lead seven times in the opening seven minutes. After Tenicia Spence put the Wildcats up 12-10 with a 3-point bucket at the 13:02 mark, the Rams would go on a quick 10-1 run, led by five points from Jacobs, over a 1:56 span to jump ahead 20-13.
Wilmington fought back to cut the Philadelphia lead to 22-20 on a Lauren Brown triple with 9:58 left in the half. A brief 8-2 spurt, capped by an Arnao put-back at the 8:03 mark, allowed the Rams to take a half-high eight point advantage (30-22).
With their lead trimmed to 32-30 after a Taylor Carter fast break lay-up with 1:56 on the clock, the Rams scored seven of the half's final nine points to take a 39-32 lead to the locker room.
A three-point play from junior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) with 18:25 left to go put Philadelphia ahead by double digits for the first time (45-34). Four minutes later, the Rams' advantage ballooned to a game-high 13 points (56-43) on a Heck bucket.
Wilmington didn't go away as it responded with 14 of the game's next 19 points to pull within four points (61-57). Jasmine Lee, who finished the game with 11 rebounds, scored six of her 11 points during the run.
Arnao hit a second-chance basket at the 5:25 mark to spark an 8-2 run that would put the Rams back up 10 (71-61) and give them control of the game.
Spence led Wilmington with 16 points.
The Rams finished the game shooting 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field and the Wildcats connected on 39.0 percent (30-of-77) of their attempts. At the free throw line, Philadelphia shot 78.6 percent (33-of-42) while Wilmington shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18). The 33 made free throws and 42 free throw attempts are season-highs.
Philadelphia travels to Post for a CACC contest on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
