Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team remained perfect in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play thanks to a 68-57 road victory against conference opponent Dominican (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon in the Hennessy Center.
Philadelphia is now 7-3 overall and 5-0 against the CACC. The Rams have won their last four outings, all against conference competition.
Sophomore forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) scored a career-high 14 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, and grabbed six rebounds to the lead Rams. Junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) contributed 13 points in a reserve role. Sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added 12 points and six boards.
The Chargers (3-8, 1-3 CACC) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead 1:38 into the contest. Philadelphia countered with a 6-0 surge of its own to knot the score at six.
Trailing 16-13, the Rams got back-to-back buckets from sophomore guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) to take their first lead of the game (17-16) at the 9:30 mark. After a KC Jentzen jumped tied the game at 24, Philadelphia outscored Dominican 14-5 over the final 5:19 of the half—which included a buzzer-beating trey from junior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy)—to take a 38-29 lead at the break.
The Rams opened the second half as strong as they ended the first half. Philadelphia scored the first seven points of the second half to push the gap to a game-high 16 points (45-29) at the 16:32 mark.
Dominican got within seven, going on a 9-0 spurt to make the score 45-38. Philadelphia came back with a 7-0 run—six points coming from Newell—to regain a 14-point advantage (54-40) with 8:01 to go. The Chargers only got as close as seven multiple times over the final eight minutes.
Jentzen posted a double-double for the Chargers with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The Rams shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field, while the Chargers connected at a 35.5 percent (22-of-62) clip. Dominican went 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) at the line and Philadelphia was 17-of-25 (68.0 percent).
The Chargers outrebounded the Rams, 44-34.
Philadelphia will look to remain unblemished in CACC play when the team heads to Wilmington (Del.) for a conference contest on Wednesday, Jan 8 at 6 p.m.
