Women's basketball takes CACC southern division lead with 83-66 win over Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA – Junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) scored a game-high 22 points and dished out six assists as the Philadelphia University women's basketball team took over first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) southern division with an 83-66 win against Holy Family Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia is now 12-5 overall and remains perfect in conference play with a 10-0 mark. The Rams are two wins away from matching their longest CACC winning streak of 12 during the 2005-06 season.

Holy Family falls to 12-6 overall and 10-1 against the conference.

Senior guard Samantha Morris (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford) poured in 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) added 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for her team-leading sixth double-double of the year.

The Rams took command of the contest early on with an 18-2 run in the opening 8:13. Philadelphia, who scored the first 12 points of the game, shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) during the surge while forcing Holy Family to shoot 7.1 percent (1-of-14). Morris led the charge with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Philadelphia's lead shrank to 10 points (31-21) when Mary Ellen McCollum drained two free throws with 4:25 left in the opening half. Morris finished off her strong first half, in which she scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, with a trey at the 1:09 mark that allowed the Rams to regain a 15-point lead (44-29).

A 7-0 Tiger run during the early stages of the second half, capped by a Sarah Pawlak basket with 13:38 left in the game, trimmed the Ram advantage to seven (55-48). Philadelphia slammed the door on any Holy Family hopes for a comeback with a 16-4 run to move ahead by 19 (71-52) with 8:00 left. Arnao led the surge with six points.

The Rams took their largest lead of the game (77-57) on a Young bucket at the 5:32 mark.

Carolyne Heston led the Tigers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Reagan Jewell and Pawlak scored 10 points each.

Philadelphia finished the game shooting 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field and 78.3 percent (18-of-23) at the free throw line. Holy Family connected at a 35.2 percent (25-of-71) clip from the floor, 73.3 percent (11-of-15) at the stripe. The Rams owned a 44-35 rebounding advantage.

The Rams head to Caldwell for a clash of CACC division leaders on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
