PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team got its 2013 season off to a solid start as it took down host University of the Sciences, 8-1, in a non-conference match on the McNeil Field Courts Thursday afternoon.
Philadelphia stormed out of the gates by winning all three doubles matches by the score of 8-0. Freshman Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and senior Isabella Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano de Quito) made up the No. 1 doubles team. The No. 2 tandem was freshman Naia Bengoa (Caracas, Venezuela/San Ignacio de Loyola) and junior Olivia Amato (Hartford, Conn./Cheshire). Junior Sylvia Bennicelli (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and senior Elizabeth Verbits (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) teamed up to take the No. 3 match.
In singles action, Espinosa cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles, while Amato and junior Magill Kurts (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) were 6-1, 6-0 victors in the No. 3 and No. 4 matches. Freshman Anna Slomowitz (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) won her first collegiate match, 8-2 over Allison Korn in No. 5 singles action. Bennicelli took the No. 6 match against Tea Cadenovic, 8-0.
Philadelphia will look for its second win of the year when it welcomes Molloy to the Salaman Courts for its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 7 at noon.
