Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's tennis team concluded the regular season with a tight 5-4 Senior Day victory over the University of the Sciences in a non-conference match on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts Thursday.
With the win, the Rams end the season with an overall record of 12-11. Philadelphia earned the third seed for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, and will face second seed Chestnut Hill in the semifinal round on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
USciences is now 6-10.
Prior to the start of the match, head coach Shawn Becker and the Philadelphia University department of athletics honored seniors Kyle Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingston) and Josh Greenberg (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day).
Once the match started, the Rams fell behind 2-0 with losses at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 team of Ayman Barakat (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Kharkiv Specialized English School #3) and Nail Rachidi (Meknes, Morocco/Emile Anouar) got the Rams on the board as they recovered from a 7-6 deficit to knock off David Kazekevich and Julian Katzev, 9-7.
The seniors put Philadelphia in the lead with victories in singles play. Greenberg knocked off Paul Bedway, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6 singles and Burke defeated Kazekevich in the No. 1 match, 6-2, 6-3. Burke's win gives him 98 in his career.
After the Devils tied the match at three with a victory in the No. 2 match, Long Vo (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) put the Rams back in front as he defeated Peter Micu in the No. 5 flight, 6-4, 6-2.
The match came down to the No. 4 flight where Chris Casamassima (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Mary's) edged out Julian Katzev 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) and gave Philadelphia the win.
