PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team was swept by the University of the Sciences, 6-0 and 7-4, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon.

After the doubleheader, the Rams are now 10-18 overall and 3-7 in the CACC. The Devils go to 12-8 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Junior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.) gave the Rams a 2-1 lead in the third inning of game two with a two-out single that scored junior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley), who singled two batters earlier.

The Devils responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in the fourth, which resulted in five runs coming home. Nicole Rivera hit a two-run home run and Devon DeBellis, Erin Summers, and Jackie Kiefer added RBI singles.

Trailing 7-2, Philadelphia attempted to rally in the bottom of the second. Freshman center fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) and freshman catcher Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) singled to open the inning. Senior first baseman Kacie DeMaio (Highland, N.Y./Highland) drove Kakareka home with a double. After Burrell was cut down at home on a fielder's choice for the second out, sophomore shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) knocked in DeMaio on a sacrifice fly. The game ended two batters later on a fielder's choice.

Freshman right fielder Emilia Cantrell (Pipersville, Pa./C.B. East), Burrell, and Kakareka all had two hits for the Rams. Katie Dickson and Summers recorded three hits for the Devils.

Courtney Spina was the winning pitcher after giving up four runs—three earned—on nine hits and striking out five. Freshman starter Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) fanned four over 3.2 innings in a losing effort.

In the opener, sophomore starting pitcher Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) led the Philadelphia offense with two of the team's five hits.

The Devils recorded seven hits and took advantage of six Rams errors to score three times in the first, once in the fifth, and twice in the sixth.

Haley Kavelak was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored for USciences. Courtney Corcoran added two hits.

Cassie Lapotsky earned the win as she struck out three in a complete-game effort. Abromavage went five innings, gave up four runs—one earned—on six hits, and fanned two.

Philadelphia squares off with East Stroudsburg in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3 at 2:30 p.m.
