PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team was swept in a road non-conference doubleheader by Chestnut Hill Thursday afternoon by scores of 12-1 (five innings) and 1-0.

In the nightcap, sophomore left fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) paced Philadelphia's (1-5) nine-hit attack with three hits in three at-bats and a stolen base.

Chestnut Hill (3-1) scored the game's lone run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI base hit from first baseman Allie Williams, who was 2-for-3 in the contest.

Six other Rams recorded one hit during the second game, including a one-hit double in the second inning by junior third baseman Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.Y./Port Jefferson).

Freshman starting pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) turned in a solid performance as she fanned seven, walked none, and scattered just four hits in five innings of work. She received a no-decision.

The Griffins' Mandi Rush scattered nine hits while striking out three to earn the complete-game victory.

Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when junior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) came home from third on a wild pitch. Lewis drew a two-out walk and advanced to third on a double off the bat of junior centerfielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.), one of two Philadelphia hits in the game.

Freshman Emilia Cantrell (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks E.) had the other hit, a two-out double in the fourth.

Chestnut Hill did all of their damage in the first two innings as the Griffins scored six runs in the first and six more in the second. Sarah Mattaliano hit a grand slam in the first and Francesca Faillace went deep to drive in two runs in the second.

Courtney Dayter was a complete-game winner in the circle for Chestnut Hill.

Philadelphia heads to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for its spring break trip that gets underway on Monday, March 11 against Norwich at 11 a.m. and Gordon at 1 p.m.
