Rams split conference twinbill with Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team took game two of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader 7-5 to earn a split with visiting Chestnut Hill on Wednesday afternoon. The Griffins took the first game, 1-0.

In the second game, the Rams (9-9, 2-2 CACC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth.

Junior second baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) opened the scoring with a solo home run, her team-leading fifth round-tripper of the season. Freshman starting pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) helped own cause with a RBI single. In the fourth, sophomore shortstop Stephanie Martin and Lewis recorded back-to-back run-producing singles.

The Griffins (4-6, 1-1 CACC) got two runs back in the fifth with a two-run double off the bat of Megan Kehr.

Philadelphia answered back by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth. Left fielder Emma Haley (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) recorded a sacrifice fly, freshman right fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) knocked in a run on a ground out, and Martin produced a RBI single.

Chestnut Hill closed the gap on a wild pitch in the sixth and a two-run homer in the seventh by Julie Heaton.

Martin, Smith and freshman catcher Emilia Cantrell (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks E.) each had three hits, while Lewis had two. The Rams recorded 14 hits in the game.

Smith earned the win as she fanned six over seven innings, while giving up five runs—four earned—on nine hits.

Mandi Rush took the loss after allowing all seven runs—five earned—on 14 hits in six innings.

In game one, the Griffins scored the game's lone run came on a Ram error that plated Sarah Mattaliano, who had two hits.

Sophomore pitcher Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) was the hard-luck loser as she allowed just the one unearned run on seven hits in seven innings. She fanned 10 hitters, tying a season-high.

Lewis had two of the Rams' three hits.

Courtney Dayter tossed a complete-game three-hitter to earn the win for Chestnut Hill. She struck out six.

Philadelphia will head to Concordia (N.Y.) for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 starting at noon.
