Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University softball team opened its 2013 season with a pair of defeats to visiting Lock Haven Saturday afternoon, 9-7 and 11-3 in five innings.
After falling behind in game one 3-0, Philadelphia (0-1) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-out RBI single from sophomore third baseman Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees).
The Rams' offense exploded in the home half on the second inning with six runs to take a 7-3 advantage. Freshman right fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) started the scoring with a RBI single that plated freshman first baseman Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), who doubled to start the inning.
Junior Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.) put Philadelphia in the lead with a two-run single to right-center field. Sophomore Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.)/Jefferson Twp.) and freshman Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) padded the advantage with a RBI walk and a two-run single to center, respectively.
Lock Haven (3-1) responded with a five-run third inning to reclaim the lead at 8-7. Kelsey Mullins and Bridgette Clarke both drove in a pair of runs during the rally.
The Lady Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth.
Kakareka and Riabko contributed two hits each to Philadelphia's seven-hit attack.
In the nightcap, Lock Haven jumped out to a 10-0 lead after plating eight runs in the second and two in the third.
With two outs in the home half of the fourth, Smith came through with an RBI single to bring in Philadelphia's first run.
The Rams scored two more times in the last of the seventh on a Riabko double to right and a Schell single.
Smith and Riabko both recorded two-hit games for the Rams. Clarke paced the Eagles in game two with a 3-for-3 effort and knocked in two runs.
Philadelphia hosts West Chester in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 5 at 2 p.m.
