Morris, Jacobs lead women's basketball to 72-65 win over Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – Junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) and senior guard Samantha Morris (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford) combined to score 49 points on 18-of-27 shooting in the Philadelphia University women's basketball team's 72-65 victory over Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match-up Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia—who was playing its first game in two weeks—improves to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in CACC play. The Rams snapped their four-game losing streak against the Lightning, and picked up their first home win over Goldey-Beacom since Jan. 22, 2009.

Jacobs netted a career-high 25 points, while shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-11 at the line, in 30 minutes of action. In the first half, Jacobs connected on four of her six shot attempts to score a half-high 13 points.

Morris went for a career-high 24 points, going 10-of-15 from the floor. Nine of Morris' 15 second-half points came during a 12-2 Philadelphia run that turned a two-point Ram lead into a 69-57 advantage with 5:03 to play.

The Lightning (6-6, 3-2 CACC) used an 8-0 surge to take a five-point lead (16-11) at the 12:30 mark of the opening half. Briana Richmond-Peters and Lillian Chukwueze each scored four points in the run.

Philadelphia came back with six straight points, capped by a Morris basket, to regain the lead (17-16).

Goldey-Beacom moved back in front by four (36-32) when Renee Dunn drained a 3-pointer with 1:12 left in the half. Philadelphia took the lead back on a Jacobs triple 42 seconds later to make the score 37-36.

Dakia Manning gave the Lightning a 38-37 halftime lead by hitting a lay-up with three seconds on the clock.

Jacobs opened the second half with five consecutive points to put the Rams in front 42-38. After the Lightning tied the game at 44 on a Chelsea Grover bucket, the Rams netted five straight points to retake the lead (49-44). Philadelphia played from in front the rest of the way.

Taylor Leonard and Chukwueze led the Lightning with 12 points apiece.

Philadelphia shot a season-best 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the floor, including a perfect 7-of-7 from 3-point range. Goldey-Beacom shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) overall. The Lightning won the rebounding battle, 40-27.

Philadelphia will play its next four contests on the road. The first one is a CACC game on Saturday, Jan. 4 at Dominican (N.Y) at noon.
