Lady Rams drop CACC doubleheader to University of the Sciences

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University softball team suffered a pair of losses to the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Tuesday afternoon on McNeil Field. The Devils took game one 7-0 and the nightcap 4-1.

 

In the game one the University of the Sciences (7-11, 5-5 CACC) put together a big inning with four runs in the second inning to make the score 5-0. Second baseman Devon DeBellis and third baseman Kerrianne Jones had RBI singles, while catcher Erin Summers had a run-producing double.

 

That was all the run support Courtney Spina needed. Spina struck out eight, walked none and scattered six hits.

 

Nicole Troisi took the loss after allowed seven runs, just one earned, on 10 hits and fanned three.

 

First baseman Margo DeBerardinis and catcher Meaghan Lewis both went 2-for-3 for the Lady Rams (5-14, 3-5 CACC).

 

Center fielder Allison Glaser gave Philadelphia a 1-0 with a RBI single in the fifth inning of game two. Shortstop Stephanie Martin, who singled to start in frame, scored on the hit.

 

The Devils fought back in the bottom of the inning to came back and take a 3-1 lead. Catcher Samantha Anastasio and shortstop Haley Kavelak recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to produce the go-ahead and insurance runs.

 

University of the Sciences tacked on an additional run in the sixth on a Jones sacrifice fly.

 

Julie Shaw was the winning pitcher by allowing one run on six hits and striking out five. Samantha Abromavage took the loss. Abromavage gave up four runs on 11 hits, while fanning three.

 

Martin had a pair of hits for the Lady Rams. DeBellis led the Devils with three base hits.

 

Philadelphia heads to Bloomsburg for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday, March 30 starting at 2:30 p.m.
