Softball Rides to Two-Game Sweep of Chestnut Hill 10-0, 2-1

Philadelphia, PA- Veteran pitching and rookie offense provided the Philadelphia University softball team (10-12, 4-8 CACC) with two needed CACC wins in a 10-0 six-inning mercy rule and 2-1 game two win over the Chestnut Hill College Griffins (3-21, 0-12 CACC) on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams got the pitching they needed from junior ace Ali Schmidt, who threw two complete games for two wins, allowing just one earned run and striking out 18 on the day.  She improved to 7-7 on the season.

PhilaU freshman second-baseman Samantha Riabko led the Rams at the plate, staying a perfect 5-5 on the day with an RBI in each contest.

In game one, junior designated player Danielle Parisi smacked a two-run single to centerfield in the first inning to help the home squad to an early 3-0 lead in the first frame (Riabko singled in the other run that inning).  On the day, Parisi went 3-7 with three RBIs.  In the third, rookie infielder Meaghan Lewis hit her first of two homers in the game to give the Rams a 4-0 lead.  PhilaU ended it early with a six-run sixth inning, helped by Lewis' three-run bomb to make the final 10-0.  CHC's Cassie Benson suffered the loss for the Griffins.

In game two, the score was goose eggs until the fourth, when CHC scored on an RBI single from Allie Schempp.  In the bottom of that inning, PhilaU's Riabko singled in Parisi, who had reached base on her own single.  In the fifth, PhilaU freshman right-fielder Devin Griglik hit a triple and then scored on the throw to seal a 2-1 victory for the Rams.  CHC's Veronica Wilenta took the loss on the rubber.

PhilaU will not take a breather as they travel to Felician College on Friday (4/8) for a 3:30 p.m. CACC make-up doubleheader.
