Softball Falters 4-1 and 7-2 in Losses to Dominican College

Junior infielder Katie Renner had two RBI's on the day

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University softball team (4-8, 0-4) dropped their third and fourth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games 4-1 and 7-2 in the season home-opener to Dominican College (14-8, 4-0 CACC) on Saturday afternoon.

Although the Rams banged out 15 total hits on the day, the team scored just three runs (all earned).  Leading the way offensively for PhilaU was freshman outfielder Devin Griglik who went 4-8 with a double and junior catcher/third baseman Katie Renner who was 2-6 with an RBI in each contest.

In the first game of the day, DC leapt ahead 3-0 in the first on three hits and added their fourth score in the fourth inning on a groundout to PhilaU junior pitcher Ali Schmidt.  PhilaU scored their single run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Renner to score pinch runner Samantha Riabko, who was in for sophomore infielder Nicole Singel who singled to get on.  Schmidt took the loss in that contest, notching seven strikeouts.

In game two, DC again took an early 3-0 lead by the third on three hits.  In the fourth inning, DC's Deidre Jeppson knocked out a grand slam to put the Chargers ahead for good.  PhilaU responded with a run on an RBI single from junior infielder Danielle Parisi to trail 7-1.  The Rams rallied in the sixth on a Renner RBI single to score Griglik, but that was all PhilaU could muster in the 7-2 loss.  PhilaU freshman hurler Ally Vrcek had the loss in her collegiate debut, striking out one while also hitting a triple offensively.

The Rams host St. Thomas Aquinas College tomorrow (3/27) at 1 p.m. in their next doubleheader.
