Clermont, FL- The Philadelphia University softball team (4-2) continued a strong southern performance, gathering two wins today- 3-2 over St. Michael's College and an 8-0 shutout of the University of Bridgeport. The Rams are riding their first streak of 2011, picking up three wins in a row.
"We stayed focused and played defense today- and got two wins out of it," said Coach John Kelly.
In the first game vs. SMC, PhilaU's freshman infielder Samantha Riabko came up big in the bottom of the fourth inning to smack a two-run RBI single to score sophomore pitcher Nicole Singel and junior infielder Danielle Parisi for the eventual winning run. The Rams got their first run on an RBI single in the first inning from junior catcher Katie Renner (who scored freshman utility Meaghan Lewis).
Singel picked up the win, throwing a complete game with two strikeouts and five hits allowed.
Against Bridgeport, PhilaU's junior ace pitcher Ali Schmidt led the way, throwing 24 innings in 24 hours after all was said and done. Schmidt tallied seven strikeouts in the complete contest and had a perfect game going into the seventh inning with two outs. Schmidt got plenty of offensive firepower from her teammates, as Renner went 2-3 with two RBIs, Parisi went 2-4 with two RBIs, Lewis went 3-4 with an RBI and junior outfielder Allison Glaser added a 1-3 performance with an RBI.
Next, the Rams take Wednesday off before playing their final two games on Thursday (3/17) with a contest vs. New Haven at 11:30 a.m. followed by a date with Southern Connecticut State University.
