Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University women's basketball team (12-11, 8-8 CACC) failed to capitalize on an early lead against the visiting University of the Sciences Devils (18-4, 14-2 CACC) as they fell 69-64 at the Gallagher Athletic Center Tuesday night. The high scorer for the Rams was senior guard Taylor Magnus who tallied 19 points.
The Rams were bested by USP's shooting ability from the field (USP 56% - PU 39%) as well as rebounds (USP 38 – PU 24). The Rams held the ball tighter committing only 12 turnovers to USP's 24.
Much of the first stanza saw PhilaU ahead, leading by as many as nine points, their largest lead of the match coming from a free-throw shot delivered by junior center Christine Wooding at 16:43. A set of free-throws by USci at 10:48 would put the Devils in the lead, where they would remain for the rest of the game.
PhilaU left the half trailing 33-30.
Three PhilaU shooters were in double digit including Magnus (19 points), Wooding (16 points) and junior guard Stephanie Agger (10 points).
USP's Caitlin Shaw led all scorers with 25 points.
A promising drive late in the second stanza by Wooding and Agger would cut USP's lead to two at 0:54. An offensive rebound converted into a field goal by USP followed by a series of free-throws would seal the score in the final seconds, 69-64.
The next matchup for the Rams will be a home contest against Post University Saturday (2/19) at 2 p.m. The PhilaU Athletic Department will be honoring senior student athletes as well as supporting the 'Think Pink' campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer.
