Senior right hander Jacque Curtis (pictured) tossed a
complete-game, extra-inning gem for the Philadelphia University
softball team on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Rams earned a split
with regionally-ranked Caldwell College on the road. Head
Coach John Kelly's team prevailed 2-1 in the opener in
eight innings before falling by a 7-4 margin in the
second contest of the day.
In the first game, Curtis allowed just five hits and one run in
eight innings of work, earning her team-high fifth win of the
season. The host Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning on a two-run double with two outs.
The Lady Rams tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the third
inning when senior outfielder Maureen Keenan scored on a two-out
single off the bat of sophomore catcher Maggie Desmond. After
four scoreless innings sent the contest to extra frames, Curtis
knocked home the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the
eighth inning with an RBI single to right that plated Keenan.
In the bottom of the eighth, Curtis shut the door on the Cougars,
retiring the hosts in order for the victory.
In the second game of the day, Philadelphia University tallied
the first run of the contest in the first inning on Desmond's RBI
double which allowed freshman outfielder Jen Richard to score from
first. However, the Cougars scored three times off freshman
Randi Wozniak in the bottom of the first and never looked back,
eventually building a 7-1 lead. Kelly's team was able to
mount a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs
highlighted by a solo homerun off the bat of sophomore Kristin
Giamatteo and a two-run single by Keenan.
Now 8-18 overall and 4-8 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC), the Lady Rams will be back in action on Sunday,
April 13th, traveling to city rival Holy Family University for a
conference doubleheader.
