Head Coach John Kelly and his Philadelphia University softball
team kicked off the 2008 season on Wednesday afternoon, falling in
a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at
Wilmington University. The Lady Rams opened the year with a
hard-fought 2-1 setback to the Wildcats before dropping a 4-1 decision in the second game in New Castle, Del.
In the first contest, the host Wildcats scored twice in the
bottom of the first and held on for the one-run decision. The
Lady Rams tallied their lone run in the top of the fourth when
sophomore shortstop Kristyn Loughery drove in senior outfielder
Maureen Keenan with an RBI double. Senior right hander Jacque
Curtis (pictured) suffered the loss on the mound for Philadelphia
University despite surrendering just four hits and two runs in six
strong innings of work.
The Lady Rams struck first in the second game of the day when
freshman outfielder Jen Richard, who had a pair of hits in the
game, scored on an error with two outs in the top of the
first. Wilmington answered with two runs in the bottom of the
third and two more in the bottom of the fourth, accounting for the
final 4-1 margin.
Up next for Kelly and his squad will be Chestnut Hill College on
the road on Thursday, March 13th.
