Defensive Effort, Three Goals Finishes Women's Soccer Undefeated Conference Record with 3-1 Victory Against Chestnut Hill
PHILADELPHIA – Two goals from
Kiery Spatz and a late finishing score from
Laken Merchant gave enough room on a defensive minded day as the Thomas Jefferson University women's soccer team (12-3-2, 10-0-1) conclude Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition with an undefeated record as the Rams won their final regular season game 3-1 over Chestnut Hill College (5-8-2, 4-6-1) in Thursday afternoon competition.
WHAT HAPPENED
The game was a physical battle that only saw 17 total shots between both teams all game. Only six shots, three by each team, were attempted in the first half. After a close attempt in the box that resulted in a penalty kick for Jefferson, Spatz converted on the attempt and made it 1-0 for the Rams at the 35
th minute. Nearing the end of the match,
Anna Midock delivered a pass to Spatz, who popped it high in the air and fell right over the goalie's vertical attempt to save it, adding another goal for Spatz and a 2-0 lead heading into the break for the Rams.
The second half saw more offensive attempts, with Chestnut Hill taking six shots compared to Jefferson's five. The game was still a battle for the net, but the Griffins eventually cut the lead to 2-1. A pass from the left side heading to the middle was met by a Griffin header, going right over the goalie and give Chestnut Hill the score at the 72
nd minute. But the Rams would finish the day with a drive down the field by Merchant, who would take her shot from the right side of the field to the left of the net, putting a 3-1 advantage for Jefferson which they would hold onto to end the regular's season and conference play.
