PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University women's soccer team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season in dominant fashion on Saturday, downing Millersville (0-1), 6-1, at Ravenhill Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rams benefitted from a Marauders' miscue in the 11
th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The ball was centered from the right side and a Millersville defender tried to clear it over the end line but misfired it over her goalkeeper and into the net.
It took just nine minutes after the own goal for Jefferson to increase its advantage to two. The Rams were awarded a free kick from 25 yards out and
Mia Ferrara blasted it into the left side of the cage for her first collegiate tally.
Jefferson continued its offensive barrage in the 25
th minute with
Nikki Dedes picking up her first collegiate goal. Dedes received a service from
Grace Kenville, chipped it over a defender and beat the goalkeeper to give the Rams a three-goal cushion.
Millersville broke through in the second half for its lone marker of the afternoon. The Marauders converted a service into the box to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 68
th minute. However, Jefferson squashed any hope of a Millersville comeback in the 71
st minute when Dedes earned her second goal of the day with help from
Laural Erick. Erick crossed it over from the right side to Dedes, who dribbled around the keeper and hit the back of the net.
Erick registered her own goal just one minute later, sprinting past the Millersville defense and eluding the goalie to make it 5-1. Erick scored her second of the game in the final minute, finding the loose ball in a mad scramble in the box after a corner kick by
Gabby Smith.
