First half surge pushes women's soccer by Chestnut Hill, 4-2

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's soccer team scored four times in the opening half on its way to a 4-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over host Chestnut Hill Tuesday night on Plymouth-Whitemarsh Victory Field #1.

Senior forward Kristen Ferguson (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) scored her first goal of the 2013 season in the 18th minute to give the Rams (2-5-1, 2-3-1 CACC) a 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Shannon Reardigan (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) and freshman midfielder Morgan Graus (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) each assisted on the goal.

After Chestnut Hill (2-7-1, 2-3-1 CACC) was able to tie the game with a 26th-minute own goal, freshman midfielder Andrea Neski (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Ossining) banked a shot off of Griffin keeper Samantha Pauls into the net to help Philadelphia regain the lead at 2-1 in the 33rd minute.

Sophomore forward Patrice Maro (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Twp.) and senior defender Nicole Van Bourgondien (Southold, N.Y./Southold) scored 51 seconds apart to increase the margin to 4-1. Maro's first goal of the season came on a centering pass from sophomore midfielder Nicole Raab at 40:26. Van Bourgondien scored on a free kick from 30 yards away for her first tally of the year at the 41:37 mark.

Carly DiGiovanni brought the Griffins within two when she scored, with an assist from Marykate McShane, in the 82nd minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) stopped six shots to earn her second win of the season. Pauls ended the night with 11 saves.

The Rams owned a 20-16 shot edge, including a 13-5 cushion in the first 45 minutes.

Philadelphia returns home to face Holy Family in a CACC contest on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.
