Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's soccer team is headed to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament thanks to a 5-0 victory over conference opponent Bloomfield Thursday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.
The Rams entered the day 11th in the CACC standings and needing a win to move into the top eight. With the victory Philadelphia jumped up to the sixth position with a 5-5-2 conference record—6-8-3 overall. Philadelphia's first round opponent will be third seed Georgian Court on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
Before turning their focus to the Tournament, the Rams have one last regular season match left—a non-conference showdown at Southern Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
Philadelphia's offense took a while to get into the flow, going offside nine times in the first half hour. Once the Rams finally figured out the Deacons' (6-10-1, 5-6-1 CACC ) offside trap, they scored twice 1:14 apart to take a 2-0 lead.
Freshman forward Andrea Neski (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Ossining) scored on a breakaway after receiving a long crossing pass from senior defender Nicole Van Bourgondien (Southold, N.Y./Southold) at 37:39. Senior forward Michaela Van Antwerp (Andover, Mass./Andover) forced a turnover and found the back of the net to double the lead.
Sophomore forward Alexa Bergey (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway) netted her first goal of the year at 49:12 on a break down the right side to make it a 3-0 contest.
Sophomore forward Patrice Maro (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Twp.) scored the team's fourth goal—her second of the year—at 62:37 after receiving a centering pass from Bergey and shooting the ball into the open right side of the net.
Sophomore forward Angela Ferro (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) tallied her team-leading fifth goal of 2013 with 1:51 left to play when she one-touched home a freshman forward Shannon Reardigan (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) crossing pass.
In goal, sophomore keeper Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) posted six saves to record her sixth shutout of the year.
Bloomfield's Sashagay Spence made seven saves.
Philadelphia outshot Bloomfield, 21-9.
