Second-half surge gives Lady Rams 3-1 win over Caldwell

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Three Lady Rams scored in the second half to propel the Philadelphia University women's soccer team to a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Caldwell on a sloppy Ravenhill Field Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia improves 8-4-0 overall and 8-1-0 in CACC play. Caldwell, who entered the match ninth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II East Region poll, is now 8-3-0 overall and 5-1-0 against the conference.

After a rain shower soaked the teams in the first half resulting in a scoreless tie, business picked up in the final 45 minutes.

Forward Kristen Ferguson got the scoring started in the 50th minute with a shot from about 10 yards out. Forward Janine Cascio fed Ferguson with a pass to the right wing side and Ferguson did the rest to net her seventh goal of the season.

The lead was short-lived as Caldwell's Ashley Paknis tapped in a rebound on an initial shot taken by Megan Ferrara in the 55th minute to level the score at one.

Midfielder Melissa Copeland put the Lady Rams back in front with a 64th-minute strike. Copeland took a shot from the left side of the penalty area and found the right-side netting for her team-leading eighth goal on 2012. Ferguson, who back heeled the ball to Copeland, and midfielder Trisha Sileo both assisted on the game-winner.

Midfielder Carla Chmielewski teed-up a shot from about 20 yards out which found the lower left corner of the net to provide the insurance tally in the 68th minute.

In goal, Philadelphia's Kelli Kowalewski made four saves, including a sprawling save just seconds before Copeland scored the go-ahead goal, to earn the win. Caldwell's Kristina Cabales also had four stopped.

The Lady Rams outshot the Cougars, 22-9, and owned a 6-3 corner kick advantage.
