PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (2-4, 1-0 CACC) swept the USciences Devils (0-3, 0-1 CACC) on Thursday evening from the Gallagher Center by a final of 25-20, 25-14, 25-21.
-Jefferson featured a balanced attack as junior Mariah Cadzow, sophomore Logan Dontell and junior Amber Johnson each had eight kills; sophomore Abigail Kress and senior Courtney Wensel had seven apiece.
-Johnson hit .615 on the evening with eight kills and no errors on 13 attempts while Kress hit .636 with seven kills and no errors on 11 attempts.
-Junior Alexis Leddy led the Rams with 21 digs.
-Senior Alexandra Harrington notched 33 assists.
-Johnson and Dontell each had a solo block and block assist
Jefferson held a slight 5-4 edge in the first set before a seven-point run put the Rams up 12-4. USciences used a late five-point run to get back within three with the Rams leading, 21-18. Following a Jefferson timeout, the Rams recorded the final four of six points to take the set, 25-20.
The Rams jumped out to a 7-2 edge in the first and pushed it from there. The squad hit .367 in the second set with 16 kills to only five errors. Jefferson went up by as many as 11 in the set at 22-11 before winning 25-14.
The third set was tight as USciences kept it close. Freshmen Maggie Bevenour and Molly Hand both played on the home floor for the first time in the set. With the score tied 20-all, the Rams pulled away, winning the last five of six points.
Jefferson returns to action on tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8 at Wilmington University's 2018 Wildcat Regional Invitational. The Rams play Southern Connecticut State and Franklin Pierce on Friday before American International and Merrimack on Saturday.
